Waterberg
Combining Big Five game viewing with ancient mountains and iridescent valleys, the Waterberg is an area of phenomenal biodiversity and archaeological significance.
Nestled right on the border of South Africa and Botswana, the Waterberg straddles some 14,500km2 in the northern reaches of the Limpopo Province. This is the perfect area for those looking for an off-the-beaten-track safari experience. Although it is just a three-hour drive from Johannesburg, not many tourists make it to these far reaches, so it can feel remote and boundless, offering a taste of wild South Africa. Home to all of the Big Five as well as numerous other large mammals and hundreds of bird species, the Waterberg provides some truly great wildlife sightings and is malaria-free too, making it an ideal choice for families.
Not only will the rich and varied wildlife appeal, but the surrounding hills, valleys, and gorges are perfect for satisfying curious minds, providing exciting walking, riding, and biking trails and plentiful opportunities for exploration. Visitors can choose between Marakele National Park and one of the numerous privately owned reserves in the region, including the beautiful Welgevonden Game Reserve.
The Waterberg also offers a wealth of cultural attractions. Significant San rock art sites can be found within the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, and in the Makapans Valley, ancient hominid fossils have been uncovered. The intricate cave network at Mokopane has been declared a national monument and makes for a fascinating side trip to complement your Waterberg safari.
