One wouldn't normally associate a tented camp with snowy Swedish Lapland but that is exactly what renowned Swedish photographer Fredrik Broman has achieved in this truly unique destination.

Nestled on the banks of the Råne River in Swedish Lapland the camp is scattered amongst the trees and overlooks a vast lake which is frozen for much of the year. The "laavu" tents are based on a traditional Scandinavian tipi design that ties in with the indigenous Swedish Sami reindeer-herding people. Despite their authentic design the tents are very comfortable featuring a wood burning stove that keeps the tents snug and cosy and up to 4 single camp style beds. They are bright and airy and with plenty of headroom! In true camping style the washroom is situated between 20-75 meters from the lavvus but do bear in mind that there are no showering facilities!

Guests commune together either around the campfire which boasts reindeer hide covers and a stunning panoramic view across the lake or for cooler evenings the lounge laavu offers a welcoming retreat where coffee is always brewing and where delicious meals such as smoked reindeer are served.

The location of the tented camp lends itself perfectly to making the most of the myriad winter activities on offer. From being whisked across the frozen lake on a custom built ski-bench clad with reindeer hides and towed by a snow-mobile, to snowshoeing in search of reindeer, husky sledding to Aurora Borelis watching, photography classes with Broman or ice fishing or even ice sculpting.

In particular the Northern Lights possibilities and huskies deserve an individual mention. Given the camp's location there is no artificial light to interfere with your chances of spying the Aurora Borealis and a walk out into the middle of the frozen lake even for a spot of star-gazing is a must with the Milkyway hovering overhead.

Richard Carlsson runs Isdimma Husky Adventures with a team of wonderful Siberian Huskies and trips on the forest and lake trails around the camp are exhilarating. Even an overnight Husky-expedition can be arranged.

For those looking for something truly out of the ordinary but will all the trimmings of a winter adventure in search of the elusive Northern Lights, a stay at the Aurora Safari Camp will not disappoint.
