Here are our top unmissable stops for where to go in California, whether you're with family, going solo, with your partner or a group of friends. Let us guide you beyond the clichés and take you deeper to uncover the secret jewels, laidback luxury and amazing contrasts of the Golden State.

Napa Valley – Wine, Wellness and Luxurious Bliss

Napa Valley is known for its wine and for good reason. With more than 400 wineries and 90+ tasting rooms open to the public, it has established itself as one of the world’s premier wine destinations. Wineries and tasting rooms offer unique tours and tasting experiences. A few noteworthy wineries include Beringer Vineyards, Sterling, Opus One, Cliff Lede Vineyards, Hess Persson Estates and Domaine Carneros, each showcasing their prestigious portfolio of wines.

Aside from its wine prowess, Napa Valley is a discerning culinary haven. Be ready to sample some of the amazing 150+ restaurants, many with a Michelin-star accolade. Restaurant highlights include The French Laundry, Auro at Four Seasons Resort, The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil, Solbar at Solage, Mustards Grill, Kenzo Napa and many more. You'll be blown away by their unparalleled cuisine, warm hospitality and unpretentious atmosphere, giving them an inviting yet sophisticated charm.

Beyond the food and wine, nothing beats the rush of excitement as you soar across Napa Valley on a hot air balloon with your local expert guide, taking in the unique vistas that sprawl below. For a different stance, immerse yourself in the exceptional arts, culture and live music of the region, with music fans having no shortage of performances to choose from in the valley. From Pop to Jazz and Country to Blues, Napa Valley has it all. If you’re looking for a rejuvenating stay, tap into the many wellness experiences offered. From mud bath treatments to the restorative mineral water, Napa Valley offers ample opportunity to recline and be pampered.

Top Tip from our North America Travel Specialist, Dean Westbrook “You can’t beat a private vineyard tour of the Napa Valley. We discussed our wine profile and preferences with our guide Peter who had been driving Napa wine tours for over 20 years, so he was able to pair our preferences across a few vineyards to match our tastes! Each stop was different from the previous and we had a superb range of experiences. Make sure you stop for a lovely lunch in the Napa Valley sunshine before making a slow roll home.”

Palm Springs – Your Luxury Desert Oasis

Step back in time among the vibrant desert oasis of Palm Springs, renowned for its retro-chic vibe (once the playground for the famous Rat Pack) and relaxed pace of life. Palm Springs is still very much on the map for those seeking sun, unrivaled outdoor activities and a unique blend of natural beauty mixed with the vibrant city life. Home to a colorful myriad of well-preserved mid-century architecture and numerous iconic buildings from the 1950s and 1960s, we recommend taking a private guided architecture tour to learn more about the design influence in the area, with a unique charm that really influences the city’s overall aesthetic.

With a strong ethos to rejuvenate, relax and escape while you are here, enjoy a slice of indulgence, with an array of luxurious resorts, spas, and premium wellness retreats, where you can bathe in exclusive natural hot springs and feel the benefit of the healing powers of the Palm Spring waters. The foodie scene is also a thriving entity - take time to indulge in the unique, elevated gastronomic experiences that showcase this dynamic culinary haven, featuring relaxed farm-to-table cuisine and exclusive dining experiences, Michelin-star delicacies and its fresh and exciting cocktail culture.

Nothing captures the spirit of national parks quite like hiking through the iconic desert oasis. Head out into Indian Canyons, home to the towering Californian fan palms and explore the stunning desert landscape of Joshua Tree National Park. Jump on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, climbing 6000 vertical feet up to the cool San Jacinto Mountains. Explore Palm Canyon Drive and hop between art galleries, cafes and cocktail bars, trendy restaurants and chic boutiques. For more family fun, embrace a new wave of adventure at Palm Springs Surf Club, redefining luxury water experiences in the desert. For a slice of culture and arts, Palm Springs doesn’t disappoint. Visit the Palm Springs Art Museum and Coachella Valley History Museum are highlights. The city also hosts annual events like the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Modernism Week, which celebrate cinema, design, arts and a thriving LGBTQ+ scene.

Top Tip from our North America Travel Specialist, Sam Barlow "I always try to make a stop in Palm Springs when driving between Los Angeles and Las Vegas as it’s such a unique part of California. With our private guides, you can step inside the iconic mid-century modern houses or head into the desert for some off-roading and hiking near Joshua Tree National Park. Wrapping up your day, I recommend making a reservation for dinner at Copley’s, set in the guest house of the former Cary Grant estate.”

Newport Beach – Coastal Elegance

Welcome to the waterfront playground of Newport Beach! A taste of coastal luxury with a laidback yet sophisticated atmosphere. Home to high-end shopping centers like Fashion Island, boasting luxury retailers, designer boutiques and fine dining restaurants. Head to the waters edge for another delicious range of waterfront dining options - sit back and enjoy fresh seafood, with a glass of something cold while watching the boats cruise by, soaking in the views.

Newport Harbor is one of the largest recreational harbours in the US, and beckons you to stroll along the waterfront or to take to the water itself. From private yacht charters, sunset cruises, gondola trips and Duffy electric boat rides to kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, there’s no better way to experience the beauty and variety of this nautical wonder than on the water.

With its luxury homes and picturesque views, the harbor offers a taste of the glamorous California lifestyle, with many hotels bringing you a slice of laidback luxury. A visit to Newport Beach wouldn’t be complete without exploring Balboa Island. This quaint, picturesque area is lined with unique shops, eateries and art galleries. You can also take a relaxing ferry ride to explore the island or enjoy a delicious Balboa Bar, a local treat that’s a must-try. There's plenty to keep kids entertained at the Balboa Fun Zone, including classic arcade games and the iconic Ferris wheel. Newport invites you to escape the everyday!

Top Tip from our North America Travel Specialist, Sam Barlow “Growing up in Southern California, I’ve always loved the classic laid-back SoCal vibe. Unlike the fast pace of LA, Newport Beach slows down in the best way. My recommendation would be to start your day with a California-style brunch at Malibu Farm Lido, then wind down with a private sunset sail where your expert captain may cruise past dolphins and whales. The perfect finish to any California road trip!”

Santa Monica – Vibrant Beachside Retreat

For a chill vibe, Santa Monica Beach is the place to be. Expansive soft sand leads the way to bike trails, an outdoor gym (cue the Original Muscle Beach) and wellness activities by the bucket load. Greet the sunrise with an early morning beach spin class or yoga session, or enjoy a scenic ride along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (locally known as ‘the Strand’). This 22-mile paved trail and biking path starts just north of Santa Monica and ends at the Torrance County Beach. Enjoy the sea breezes and beautiful sunsets with alfresco dining options, from beachfront restaurants with ocean views to vibrant patios along Third Street Promenade, as well as a thriving collection of Michelin-starred and celebrity chef restaurants.

Live like a local in Santa Monica, and explore the destination’s charming neighbourhood businesses and locally-owned restaurants before relaxing on the beach as the sun dips over the ocean. Shop alongside residents and chefs at four vibrant farmers markets each with their own unique experience, offering an abundance of seasonal fresh produce and local goods, with many restaurants in the Los Angeles area sourcing ingredients directly from these markets. Weekly farmers markets are held Downtown on Wednesdays and Saturdays, on Pico Boulevard on Saturdays, and on Main Street on Sundays.

Embrace the city’s arts and culture landscape, with a unique atmosphere of artistic talents throughout over 55 Santa Monica museums, galleries, public art installations, theaters and hands-on creative experiences. For families, the Santa Monica Pier is a must-visit California icon with an amusement park, aquarium, the solar-powered Pacific Wheel, shopping, tempting restaurants and more.

Top Tip from our North America Travel Specialist, Dean Westbrook “Should you be lucky to be staying on the beachfront, be sure to take a walk along the Third Street Promenade and up onto the nearby Santa Monica Pier. One of the draws of Santa Monica over downtown LA or West Hollywood is that you are on the water and away from the bustle of the downtown. The Pier will still be busy but it has a more relaxed atmosphere and it’s a great spot to see local performers if you have a penchant for the arts! My favorite hotel here is the wonderful Shutters on the Beach!”
