Swedish Lapland for Families
26 February 2020
Swedish Lapland is ideal for families with older children as its brimming with thrilling acitivies which will keep the whole family entertained. Our travel expert, Georgie, tells us which hotels are best.
Swedish Lapland is a real winter wonderland and fun for all ages! Offering so much more to your average school vacation trip, a trip to Lapland is all about making the most of memories, enjoying the winter sceneries and spending time as a family. Days are filled with fun wintery activities and evenings involve curling up in a log cabin with a roaring fire and hot chocolate, while discussing how fun your day was! I would suggest a 4-night stay in Swedish Lapland and if you have older kids then you can really make the most of it by hopping around a couple of different hotels too!
I don’t think anyone can properly set you up for what to expect in Swedish Lapland, being a skier myself I have seen plenty of snowy landscapes, but when the hotels are some of the most iconic in the world, the experience side of the vacation is a whole other ball game! Be prepared to take a LOT of layers with you as you’ll be spending a lot of time outside and be open to eating a lot of local foods, reindeer and moose regularly pops up on the menu.
A stay at the famous Ice Hotel in a stunning sculpted room is not one for the faint hearted but it is one of the best experiences that you will talk about forever more! A must for all families is their ice sculpting course too, a truly unique, fun experience for everyone.
Another real highlight would be spending a night at the Treehotel, feeling like you are on top of the world in one of the coolest treehouses you’ll ever step foot in. From here you can take part in some wonderful private experiences, snowmobiling, husky sledding or a family snowshoe walk – just look out for the wild reindeer and moose! I would recommend packing your day full of activities, daylight or no daylight, as the best way of making the most of this scenery.
For those wanting a cozy cabin retreat the Arctic Retreat is perfect – I could have stayed forever! The magical lakeside location offers a serene, peaceful setting with plenty of space for the whole family. The activities here offer something for everyone, whether it be following fox tracks on snow shoes, or jumping on board a husky sled for a spin or even trying your hand at catching your dinner for that evening with some ice fishing!
Brandon Lodge and Pine Bay Lodge are located further South in Lulea, they are sister properties and have always been hot favorites of ours for families. Here you have views out over the frozen Baltic sea and you can make the most of it by jumping on board their hovercraft. One of the real highlights is booking their Aurora Hideaway and having dinner on the ice one evening, not only are you in a prime position for Northern Light spotting, but you will be whisked there by snowmobile and then have a magical experience with a private chef, local food and even a log fire in your own private toilet too!
All in all, there is something for everyone and countless activities you can do to fit around your family, but one thing I can promise is you will leave wanting to return as soon as possible.
