Botswana’s winter is during our British summer, and the weather is hot during the day, but it isn't a stifling heat, and cold at night. The summer months (British winter) can be hot and humid and there is a chance of rain. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between mid-December and runs through to mid-March.
Itinerary
Fly to Maun
Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta and Moremi, Botswana
Today your journey begins as you catch a flight from London to Johannesburg before connecting onto a flight to Maun, Botswana. Feel your excitement build as you board a light aircraft flight to Moremi Game Reserve and gaze out the window at the glistening flood plains and acacia forests beneath you. As you descend, you’ll see elephants and plains game dotting the landscape. Your safari starts the moment you land in this pristine wilderness.
Your Letaka guide will greet you off the plane at Xakanaxa Airstrip and game drive you to your mobile tented camp, located right in the heart of the bush. After relishing on a hearty lunch in the shade of woodland, head out on your afternoon game drive. This area is famed for impressive wild dog populations and you could be lucky enough to follow a pack of these highly intelligent canines as they prowl the land for prey. As your first day comes to a close, enjoy a sundowner out in the bush, with giraffes and towering palm trees silhouetted against the brilliant orange sky before heading back to camp for the night.
Khwai Private Reserve, Okavango Delta and Moremi, Botswana
After breakfast you will head into the Mababe Community Area. As you game drive into this region, gaze in awe at majestic bull elephants crossing through the still waterways. Look out across a tranquil lagoon and see a break in the water as a hippo lifts it head to take a breath. You’ll head to your mobile camp which is your base for the next 3 nights. This afternoon, journey through the reed channels by mokoro, a traditional dug out canoe. Propelled with poles by expert guides, they will glide you through the wilds while you sit back and feel the serenity of these peaceful channels, observing frogs and insects amongst the reeds with splashes of color catching your eye, as the vibrant blue and orange colors of the malachite kingfisher zip past you. Head back to camp and enjoy a delicious home cooked dinner before gathering around the crackling camp fire, listening to the sounds of lions roaring in the distance.
The rest of your time here will be spent immersing yourself in the wild and tracking predators and big game. The area is famed for lions, leopard and cheetah and as you are in a private concession, you have the thrilling experience of exploring the wild at night. As the spotlight turns on, meander through Mababe in your game vehicle, spotting the amber eyes of a leopard watching you from the darkness of an acacia tree. Or go in search for the rare and nocturnal species such as bush babies and aardvark.
Chobe National Park, Botswana
This morning you will head north east into Chobe, Botswana’s second largest national park and an area known for incredible elephant and lion sightings amongst the glistening rivers and marshes. You will spend the next three nights here in an exclusive wilderness campsite.
During your time here you will game drive through this wildlife abundant region. You will have the opportunity to head into the Savuti area, specifically the Savuti Marsh which has often been used as the stage for many dramatic wildlife documentaries. Over the years, lions have learned to hunt elephants here and if you’re lucky, you may witness a pride of lions attempting to bring down an elephant, a truly phenomenal encounter. For avid birders, this area is teeming with birdlife, particularly some impressive birds of prey like the African hawk-eagle and the yellow-billed kite. Evenings will be spent lazing around the roaring fire, listening to the sounds of the bush under the night sky brimming with stars.
