Founded in 1650, Paraty (or Parati as it is also known) is a beautiful colonial town that has remained relatively unchanged right into the 21st century. It used to be the principal port for exporting gold and other minerals in the country and enjoyed great prosperity. Today, Paraty is considered to be one of the most important examples of colonial architecture in the world.
The Pousada do Ouro, built in the 18th Century, retains much of its colonial charm. The guesthouse is just a few meters' walk to the sea, where you can take a short boat trip to the surrounding islands, bays and beaches. The guest rooms and suites have been decorated in the simple but characterful Paraty style and feature modern amenities.
An excellent way to spend the day is on a boat or schooner exploring many of the 65 unspoiled islands, which have golden sandy beaches. The area is also ideal for walking, hiking, snorkeling and fishing. In the historical center of Paraty there are numerous boutiques, bars and charming little restaurants offering delicious local cuisine, including mouth-watering seafood.
