Bogota surrounds

Sprawling out at the foothills of the Andes at 2650m above sea level, Bogota is one of the biggest cities in Latin America. Bogota might not capture your heart at first sight, but wander through La Candelaria, a cobble stone district of cafes, theaters, colonial architecture and churches and you’ll see what the city has to offer. The Museo de Oro or Gold Museum holds the largest and best collection of pre-Colombian gold and art in the world; visit the Botero Art Museum for an insight into Colombia’s most famous artist and cultural commentator and take a tour of the Military Museum for a candid commentary on Colombia’s most recent political history.

El Candelaria and the Zona Rosa have bustling bars, excellent restaurants and boutiques, and the Sunday markets, namely at Usaquen, provide a chance to mingle with the locals.

Take the cable car to the top of Cerro Montserrate, famous for the landmark Monserrate Monastery and incredible views of the city. If you have time, a visit to the magnificent Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, just 25kms outside of Bogota is a must see. The Cathedral sits some 200 meters underground in the Halite Mountain and receives a congregation of up to 3000 people every Sunday.
