As the holiday season arrives, our latest travel trends report has revealed some intriguing insights about how Americans plan to celebrate this year.

Our survey of 2,000 American adults has revealed nearly a quarter (23%) are gearing up to spend the festivities abroad, with over half (47%) of these travelers setting their sights on Europe.

France emerges as the top destination, attracting 9% of those venturing overseas, followed closely by Italy at 8%.

Notably, one in ten (9%) are preparing to embark on their first-ever trip abroad for the festivities, embracing new experiences and traditions in a foreign country.

However, not everyone is eager to leave the country for the festivities; a significant quarter (25%) of Americans say they would never consider spending the holiday season abroad. This blend of travel enthusiasm and traditionalism is an interesting trend we’ve noticed this upcoming festive season.

Likely due to its charming Christmas markets and world-renowned cuisines, it’s no surprise that for those traveling abroad over the festivities, Europe is a firm favorite, with seven out of the top ten being European countries.

The top 10 most popular destinations for Americans over the festive period are:

  1. France (10%)
  2. Italy (8%)
  3. Mexico (6%)
  4. UK & Ireland (6%)
  5. Bahamas (5%)
  6. Denmark (4%)
  7. Spain (4%)
  8. Finland (4%)
  9. Norway (3%)
  10. South Africa (3%)

These iconic destinations promise an unforgettable experience, with your choice of seasonal cheer or a touch of winter sun.

Stephanie McClendon, our Sales and Service Manager has shared her thoughts on why Americans are choosing to travel abroad during the festivities…

Americans generally receive fewer vacation days than what is common in countries like the UK and other parts of Europe. During the festive season, American travelers often take advantage of additional time off, allowing them to either save vacation days for future trips or take a longer, more extensive vacation for the festivities.

Many Americans see the festive season as an opportunity to visit extended family who live farther away. Since travel is already required, many families choose to venture abroad, spending time together in unique destinations and creating lasting memories.

The Ultimate Itinerary for Festive Travelers

Our study uncovered that during the festive season, a top reason Americans are increasingly drawn to the allure of international travel is the excitement of discovering new foodie hotspots and savoring exquisite cuisines.

The top activities on the itinerary are:

  1. Trying new foodie hotspots/restaurants (37%)
  2. Trying new cuisines (33%)
  3. Relaxing on a beach (32%)
  4. Visiting cultural or historic sites (28%)
  5. Relaxing in a spa or wellness retreat (24%)

Interestingly, there is a clear split between those who are seeking adventure and those who crave relaxation.

Planning on Traveling for the European Cuisine? Here Are Our Expert Foodie Recommendations

Vienna, Austria

Filled to the brim with cozy cafes and festive markets, this capital city is rich in culinary tradition.

Vienna is famous for its Sachertore, an indulgent chocolate cake as well as Apfelstudel, its sweet yet perfectly tangy apple strudel. Not only will you find sweet treats in abundance, local sausages and roasted chestnuts are also popular snacks to enjoy while walking through the abundance of Christmas markets.

Scotland, United Kingdom

Edinburgh, steeped in Scottish tradition, offers a festive feast for the senses. Start at East Princes Street Gardens Christmas Market, where you can enjoy artisanal cheeses, smoked salmon, and mulled wine against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

If you're ready to eat like a local, indulge in a classic spiced Scottish pudding on Christmas Day, then ring in the New Year with Edinburgh’s famed Hogmanay celebration featuring traditional dancing, food markets, and a parade through Old Town.

Lisbon, Portugal

While not typically associated with snow, Lisbon is a great place to enjoy festive food in a milder climate.

Traditional Portuguese foods you will find around the festivities include Bacalhau, a salted codfish often served alongside chickpeas on Christmas Eve. Enjoy the famous Pastel De Nata, washed down with a glass of Ginja cherry liqueur while soaking up the culture.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen, home of the hygge cozy atmosphere, is a city that embodies the festive spirit. During a vacation here you could head to Tivoli Gardens, an iconic Christmas market offering a wide variety of traditional Danish cuisine.

Festive favorites such as Roasted Pork and Frikdadeller, Danish meatballs, are accompanied with a hot glass of flavorful mulled wine. Don’t miss out on trying Risalamande, a rice pudding drizzled with Cherry sauce containing a hidden almond. This is a fun tradition where until someone finds the almond, you keep eating the dessert.

For Some, there is ‘Snow’ Place Like Home
