Tin mining is one of the oldest and most successful industries in Malaysia. Mining first began on a large scale in the mid-19th century, mainly operated by Chinese immigrants. By the end of the century, Malaysia was the world's biggest supplier of tin, although this has since declined substantially.
On your tour, you will visit the renowned Royal Selangor Pewter Factory. The company was started in 1885 by a young Chinese immigrant named Ying Koon. It is now the largest pewter company in the world. At the factory, you will learn about the many processes used to create a pewter product as well as the organization's history.
You will also have a brief stop at the Batik Center. Here you can see how beautiful motifs are hand drawn onto pieces of silk or cotton with a special method called 'canting'.
The Batu Caves consist of a complex of huge limestone caves. Before the entrance to the main cave, you will see an impressive golden statue of the Hindu god, Lord Murugan, which stands at nearly 43 meters tall.
Climb the 272 steps to the main cave temple. Within this enormous cave, the vaulted roof reaches 100 meters high, and there are a number of temples and shrines. Before you descend, make sure to spend some time taking in the amazing views.
Please note that the Batu Caves are a religious site; therefore, we suggest dressing modestly. There are also often a lot of monkeys around, so do take care of your belongings!
