Best Time to Visit Mongolia
Mongolia has two distinct seasons: a mild summer and a harsh winter. The best time to visit Mongolia is during the summer months, from late May to early September, when the steppe is lush, temperatures are mild, and the days are long. Our favorite time to explore this epic country, particularly for an extra cultural hit, is mid-July when the annual Naadam Festival is held across the country, with archery, horse riding and wrestling events.
For those venturing totally off the beaten track to the northern Altai Mountains, the first weekend in October is when the Golden Eagle Festival is held, where Kazakh Eagle Hunters from across the region compete in age-old games, showcasing their incredible falconry skills. Mongolian winters are bitterly cold; Ulaanbaatar is the world’s coldest capital city, so we would advise against traveling throughout the colder months from mid-October to mid-April.
