Hotel Brosundet

Brosundet is a seriously stylish boutique city hotel and a great base for exploring Ålesund. Located right on the water, this old warehouse has sloping floors and exposed beams that hark back to its life as a warehouse but with modern Scandinavian décor.

Hotel Brosundet
  • The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite on the 5th floor is amazing and perfect for families

  • Room 47 is a standalone lighthouse where breakfast is delivered by bike

  • Location wise it's hard to beat Brosundet with the harbor and pretty Belle Époque city on your doorstep

  • Many rooms have harbor views

Brosundet, pronounced Brosundah, is an old fish factory right on the harbor in pretty Ålesund. It is a sister hotel to Union Oye and Storfjord making them a triple crown of supremely charming properties, each offering their own unique style.

For Brosundet that is Norwegian contemporary furnishings, spacious rooms and suites and an in-house restaurant Maki that is one of the city’s best - a perfect base for couples and families alike, the latter being comfortably housed in a vast 5th floor 2 bedroom 2 bathroom suite if they so choose!

An amalgamation of two separate buildings connected by an underground tunnel, the property retains a more intimate feel than it's 132 rooms would suggest. Rooms have exposed wooden beams, sloping floors that confirm the building's long history and bathrooms that belie its old age. Think deep bathtubs and plate glass showers, pure white ceramics and Ren products. Guests can choose to either face the quaint city streets or look out across the pretty harbor.

Maki, one of Ålesund's most renowned restaurants, serves up delectable dishes with a keen focus on Norwegian produce and cooking. Beefsteak of whale is one of the dishes on the 4 course tasting menu, while those with an appetite can opt for a 6 course version that won't disappoint. An excellent wine list accompanies, and the charming staff are on hand to assist with any request.

For more relaxed dining, the hotel's waterfront breakfast room also offers evening meals consisting of hearty local fare. The informal dining area opens out onto the intimate lobby, where drinks are served beside the open log-fire.

The stylish Brosundet Bar has its own entrance onto the street, and is a cozy place to start your evening or just have a cocktail or glass of wine after dinner.

There are old fashioned bicycles tied up outside, free for guests to use to explore the city if a kayak or on foot doesn't appeal.  The same bicycles are used by the staff to deliver breakfast to the most unique of the hotels rooms, room number 47 housed in a lighthouse! Stay here if space is not a priority and romance is, as you enter via winding wooden stairs to a cozy bed with views to the sea through almost porthole windows!

Brosundet is a real gem and one not to miss if Ålesund is on your to do list, offering superb fine dining restaurant Maki and incredible staff to boot.
