Originally built in the early 1920s by Norwegian engineer Tollef Monniche, this Scandinavian-style estate is surrounded by one of Panama’s oldest coffee plantations in the mountains of Boquete. Producing coffee for over 90-years, Finca Lérida sits in the shadow of Volcán Barú and borders the UNESCO-listed La Amistad International Park (PILA), a natural reserve spanning both Panama and Costa Roca. This abundance of natural beauty is home to a wide variety of bird and wildlife, as well as numerous hiking trails, making the property a great option for hikers and birdwatchers.
The accommodation reflects its Scandinavian origins and includes 4 Vintage Rooms, 11 Deluxe Rooms, 6 Suites and 1 Historic Suite. The standard Vintage Rooms were the original guest rooms built for visitors in the 1920s and feature wood panelling, forest views, ensuite bathrooms with shower and hairdryer, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, safety deposit box and large balcony. Trade up to a Deluxe Room, located in the middle of the coffee plantation, for a porch with large comfortable hammock and additional amenities including bathrobes and slippers.
The suites offer good sized family accommodation with spacious living area, fireplace, large terrace, and Jacuzzi bathtubs. Casa Centenario, the property’s historic suite, dates to 1908 and features a cozy living room with fireplace, dining room, family room, library, and upper bedroom floor. All rooms and suites can sleep up to four guests.
Finca Lérida’s onsite restaurant, La Brulerie serves traditional Panamanian cuisine with a fusion of international flavors, created from fresh locally sourced produce. Meals can be enjoyed in the spacious dining room or on the veranda overlooking glorious views of the plantation and valley. It goes without saying that the coffee served in the delightful Coffee Shop is superb.
The Chiriqui Highlands are a wonderful choice for hiking and bird watching with easy access to Volcán Barú National Park which includes Panama’s only volcano and La Amistad International Park. Both offer hiking through both primary and secondary forest, gushing waterfalls and rewarding bird and wildlife watching. Guests can also take a guided tour of the coffee plantation.
