Originally built in the early 1700s by João Federico Ludovice, architect to King João V, as his private residence, today Palácio Ludovice is a luxurious boutique hotel, with a focus on Portuguese fine wine and food. Located in the vibrant Bairro Alto district, this elegant five-storey property spans an entire block close to the city’s landmark Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, providing superb views across the terracotta-roofed capital. Full of grandeur and refined sophistication, the 18th century interiors have been transformed by architect Miguel Câncio Martins, blending the old and new, using a soft blue palette, personalized furnishings, and modern comforts.
Each of the 61 rooms and suites retain their original character, with wooden floors, oversized beds, sumptuous linens, Wi-Fi and view over the city rooftops or courtyard garden. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the rooms with natural light, and many showcase the original hand-painted tiles, and decorative wood-carved ceiling and wall features. While most rooms include an ensuite shower, there are marble bathrooms with free-standing bathtubs in the open plan suites. As a wine experience hotel, the minibars are stocked with an ever-changing selection of interesting Portuguese wines.
The hotel’s courtyard is home to Federico Restaurant, a hub for serious food lovers and wine connoisseurs. Enjoy a 5-course dinner with wine pairing or book a private dining experience. Expect authentic Portuguese/French fusion cuisine created from local quality ingredients served alongside superior wines. For wine tastings with the knowledgeable sommelier, cocktails and a cosmopolitan vibe, the bar housed in the ancient, vaulted wine cellar is a stylish venue to see and be seen. To work up a healthy appetite, the hotel has a well-equipped gym and there’s a Caudalie Spa for treatments and facials, all with a wine-focused theme, such as the Cabernet Scrub, one of the popular Vinothérapie rituals.
