Cape Town is a year-round destination. The summers are generally warm and dry, while winters tend to be wet and cool, the rains brought on by fierce north westerly gales. Neither season experiences extremes of temperature, thanks to prevailing winds. Summer (Nov-Mar) is the hottest with temperatures 20-40°C. Mid season (Apr, May, Sep, Oct) temps between 10-30°C. Winter (from June- Aug) is the low season with temps 0-25°C.

There are two very distinct seasons at the Victoria Falls, the wet/flood season and the dry season. These seasons do not reflect the quantity of rain, rather reflect the volume of flow of the Zambezi River. From around March through to July the river surges in size as the rainfall in Angola and Zambia from months before swells the current. The falls are at their most dramatic at this time of year with huge columns of spray. The nights are cold and the days warm at this time of year. From around September to January the water levels drop, the falls are more accessible and views are clearer as the flow can drop in volume by 90%. It is worth noting that the rains come from late October through to February, this combined with high heat, 40 Celsius or more, in October and November, causes high levels of humidity.

There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.

Fly to Cape Town
Day 1-5

Cape Town, South Africa

Fly overnight to Cape Town, keep an eye out the window as you land in the Mother City for your first view of Table Mountain framing the horizon. Our local representative soon has you on your way into the city center, fast tracking you through the airport with ease. Watch as Table Mountain looms ever closer on your short drive, with the glittering Atlantic Ocean in the distance. More Quarters, in Cape Town’s buzzing City Bowl, oozes contemporary elegance and calm despite being only meters away from Kloof Street’s trendy bars and restaurants. Dive into the city’s vibrant culture, a melting pot that blends history, food and striking scenery for a truly alluring stay that will leave you coming back time and time again.

For the next four nights, delve into the heart of the Cape. Feel your breath catch as you edge towards the summit of Table Mountain on the iconic cable car. Capture the infinite from the top, the Cape Peninsula sweeping away into the distance in an extraordinary tableau of nature’s beauty. Indulge in some local wine as you gaze out over the views from the historic V&A Waterfront, as Cape Fur Seals frolic in the dockside waters below. Book a private tour of the Cape where you can do anything from kayaking with penguins to discovering the booming art scene in the city’s townships – the limit is your imagination. Relish being in one of Cape Town’s best locations and feast your senses at one of Kloof Street’s mouth-watering restaurants. Try the Black Sheep, a tantalisingly quirky take on Cape cuisine before sampling expertly mixed cocktails at the Dark Horse across the road.

Accommodation: More Quarters ( 4 nights )
Day 5-7

Victoria Falls - the Zim side, Zimbabwe

It’s an early start as you make your way north to the legendary Victoria Falls. The direct flight from Cape Town is scenic as you fly over South Africa’s barren desert center. Your home for the next two nights is at Old Drift Lodge, where old world charm blends enticingly with modern luxury and attention to detail. On your first evening choose to sit out on the panoramic deck overlooking the bush (perhaps with a chilled drink in hand) as dusk sets in and the wildlife wanders by, or watch the sky turn to fire on a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River, the waters reflecting the colors in a mesmerizing spectacle.

The next day, lose yourself in adventure, in the adrenaline capital of Africa; from swooping across the Batoka Gorge on a zipline to white water rafting where you thunder down the immense rapids of the Zambezi, excitement awaits. For a seriously special moment, take to the skies in a helicopter and marvel at the immensity of the Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall on earth, where photographs just don’t do it justice.

Accommodation: Old Drift Lodge ( 2 nights )
Day 7-10

Thornybush Private Game Reserve, Greater Kruger, South Africa

With direct flights to the Kruger from nearby Livingstone, it’s a breeze to access the world-famous wildlife of South Africa’s most celebrated national park. Saseka Tented Camp juxtaposes the nostalgic essence of safari with cutting edge design and style.  Modern spaces and natural touches allows for an enticing flow between inside and out. Sit out on the private deck and reconnect with nature. For foodie lovers, each meal at Sasekais worthy of Instagram, where local dishes and produce are elevated to fine dining – from breakfasts out in the bush to eating under the stars by a blazing fire, every meal is sure to delight.

Step out into the pre-dawn haze and seek out the elusive leopard, if you’re lucky draped lazily over a tree branch for that iconic photo. Fall in love with the romance of the African bush by enjoying an open air spa treatment or feast on a gourmet picnic in the flickering lanternlight as you watch the stars above in the blazing Milky Way as the Kruger night hums around. Whether you’re watching lions stalk along the Monwana river on a game drive or feeling the thrill as you catch sight of rhino on a walk, the expert guides in the Thornybush put your experience at the core of what they do. The magic of the African bush will captivate and get under your skin.
