Average time to visit

There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.

Cape Town is a year-round destination. The summers are generally warm and dry, while winters tend to be wet and cool, the rains brought on by fierce north westerly gales. Neither season experiences extremes of temperature, thanks to prevailing winds. Summer (Nov-Mar) is the hottest with temperatures 20-40°C. Mid season (Apr, May, Sep, Oct) temps between 10-30°C. Winter (from June- Aug) is the low season with temps 0-25°C.

Itinerary

Fly to Johanesburg then Hoedspruit
Day 1-6

Greater Makalali Game Reserve, South Africa

Upon arrival in Johannesburg, you will connect on to your flight to Hoedspruit, the gateway to the Kruger. Feel your excitement build as you are whisked away to the private Makalali Conservancy, which is west of the Kruger National Park. You’ll arrive at Garonga Safari camp, a bush retreat which has a luxurious simplicity about it. Your feet won’t be on the ground for long as you arrive just in time for your afternoon game drive. Hop into the open-top safari vehicle and let your excitement wander as you keep your eyes peeled for wildlife in the bush. Marvel at a herd of elephants majestically ambling by and wait in anticipation for a lion sighting, as you scan the ground for footprints. You’ll end your game drive at a scenic sundowner spot; with a gin and tonic in hand, gaze out at the horizon as the burnt orange glow of the sun settles on the landscape surrounding you. End your incredible day indulging in mouth-watering cuisine on the camp terrace, under a glistening sky of stars.

For the rest of your time here you will encounter more spectacular wildlife and immerse yourself in Garonga’s unique safari style. After an action-packed safari, end your day by sinking into tranquillity in the ‘star bath’, best shared with your loved one, and gaze up at the endless sky with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc in hand. Feel your senses awaken as you venture out on the ultimate nature walk, tracking wildlife on foot while being led by an expert guide. Feel the serenity of the wilderness as you sleep out under the stars; this is the ultimate glamping experience as you sink into your luxurious king size bed on Garonga’s sleep-out deck, after relishing on a sumptuous private dinner and bottle of bubbly, overlooking a waterhole.

Accommodation: Garonga Safari Camp ( 5 nights )
Day 6-9

Camps Bay, Cape Town

Cape Town awaits you. After a final morning game drive, cramming in some final wildlife encounters, you will fly to Africa’s mother city. You will have a VIP meet and greet service and be fast tracked through the airport to meet your driver. As you enter Cape Town, you’ll see Table Mountain towering over the city bowl, and catch a glimpse of the glistening Atlantic Ocean in the distance. You’ll arrive at Sea Five Boutique Hotel, oozing with elegance and backdropped by Table Mountain. Delve into this captivating city and uncover its delights over the next 3 days. Experience the penguin colony of Boulders Beach with a twist, as you feel the thrill of stand-up paddle boarding in the ocean, observing penguins, seals and an array of birdlife. Instead of taking the cable car to Table Mountain, why not take a hike up and reward yourself with a delicious picnic and a glass of wine at the top, contemplating the extraordinary view over the rugged coastline.  If you are a keen foodie, we can recommend some of Cape Town’s top restaurants; head to Kloof Street House, an eccentric restaurant bursting with character, and relish on fine cuisine in the intimate, fairy-lit garden.

Accommodation: Sea Five Boutique Hotel ( 3 nights )
Day 9-11

Franschhoek, The Winelands, South Africa

Now it’s time to head to South Africa’s gourmet capital, Franschhoek. You’ll be whisked away to the Winelands, passing lush green mountains dotted with plum orchards and abundant vineyards. Your base for the next couple of nights is Boschendal, one of the oldest wine estates in The Winelands, emphasising style and simplicity.

After settling into your cottage, head down to the nearby town of Franschhoek, passing Cape Dutch architecture, boutique cafes and art galleries, before arriving at the wine tram station. Indulge your senses as you glide through Franschhoek’s vineyards on the tram, getting hooked on world class wine as you hop on and off at various vineyards and relish on local cheeses and charcuterie, with the Winelands’ phenomenal scenery surrounding you. On your last full day in South Africa, why not visit the iconic Babylonstoren, enjoying a guided walk around this abundant vineyard and of course, indulging in more wine tastings. In the afternoon head out on a guided cycling tour through the valley or if you would like a slow-paced afternoon, sink into tranquillity by the glistening pool at Boschendal.

Accommodation: Boschendal ( 2 nights )
