Day 1: Drive to Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro where you’ll meet your crew and set off for three miles through afromontane forest at the base of the mountain. Reach Forest Camp, pitched amongst the trees, by mid-afternoon where you’ll be at an altitude of 3,000m (9,843ft).
Day 2: Begin your slow progression up the edge of the Shira volcano, where you’ll find sparse vegetation in the heather moorland zone. Later in the day you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the Western Breach. After 4.9 miles (8km) you’ll arrive at Shira One Camp, set at altitude of 3,000m (9,843ft), by mid-afternoon.
Day 3: Hike across the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic parts of the climb. Arrive at Moir Camp, situated at 4,099m (13,415ft), by mid-afternoon after a total of 5.6 miles (9km).
Day 4: Ascend through alpine desert on your way to Barranco Camp. An acclimatisation trek up Lava Tower gives you the chance to experience altitude and its effects. Descend again to the Barranco Valley, which will be a welcome relief for tired legs! The camp's altitude is 3,950m (12,960ft), but the maximum altitude you will climb to today is 4,600m (15,092ft).
Day 5: limb Barranco Wall and cross the scree and ridge into Karanga Valley where you’ll have superb views of the southern glacier and the Western Breach. Arrive at Karanga Camp, located at 4,100m (13,451ft), in time for lunch, and then take a short acclimatisation walk.
Day 6: Start your slow ascent up the moraine ridge, which offers amazing views of the glaciers and glacial valleys. The final stage is steep so the going is slow, but you’ll reach Barafu Camp at4,600m (15,092ft) at around lunchtime giving you plenty of time to relax and prepare for the ascent tomorrow.
Day 7: Your longest day but probably the most rewarding. Rise early and head for Uruhu Peak. The highest point in Africa at 5,895m (19,341ft), seeing the sun rise from here is truly unforgettable. Descend past Barafu Hut to Millennium Camp for a celebratory lunch then continue down to Mweka Camp for your last night on Kilimanjaro. The camp is located at 3,760m (12,336ft).
Day 8: After breakfast, start your final descent through lower heathland and rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the altitude is 1,798m (5,900ft). You’ll be collected at the gate and driven back to Ngare Sero for some well-earned rest and relaxation!
Fresh fruit and home cooked three course meals are included throughout and served in a proper dining tent and prepared by a dedicated camp chef.
