Situated on a ridge high above the Great Rift Valley with uninterrupted views of the savannah below, Katara Lodge is a comfortable game lodge located just twenty minutes from Queen Elizabeth National Park. Katara’s accommodation consists of seven comfortable grass-thatched cottages as well as a family cottage, each carved into the hillside by the villagers of Katara, and spacious inside with hand-crafted locally made décor, wooden floors and a canvas screen that can be folded back to reveal the plains stretching out below. Roll-top baths, an invigorating rain shower and a four-poster bed that can be wheeled out onto the verandah to sleep under the African stars add romance, and the family cottage also comes with a small private sitting area with a swing couch and two hammocks.
With over a hundred mammal species and 600 birds to discover, the lodge is in a perfect location to begin your exploration. On a lucky day, you might be woken up by the sound of elephants trumpeting in the savannah below! Activities include game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, chimp tracking in the Kyambura Gorge or Kalinzu Forest Reserve, guided nature walks in the Maramagambo Forest, wildlife cruises on the Kazinga channel and interpretive local village visits.
Katara Lodge has a strong relationship with a local organization, the Albertine Rift Tourism for Conservation, which seeks to combine the culture of the local people and eco-tourism by providing a tour guiding service. These guides are available on game drives and the village walks and will vastly enhance your experience of your stay at Katara.
