Tembo Plains Camp offers an unparalleled safari experience on the banks of the Zambezi River in northern Zimbabwe. Tucked away in an ancient riverside forest, the intimate 5-tent luxury camp is surrounded by the vast wildlife-rich Sapi Reserve, bordering the UNESCO-protected Mana Pools National Park. Home to large populations of elephant, buffalo, lions, leopards, and the elusive wild dogs, whether you embark on day or night game drives, boat trips, canoeing or guided walks your safari promise to be rewarding and thrilling in equal measure.
The accommodation at Tempo Plains Camp is inspired by the famous Zimbabwe Ruins, spectacular medieval stone monuments built by local African people centuries ago, reflected in the tents’ pack-stone walls. This unique design affords a greater sense of privacy, while still feeling connected to the surrounding wilderness through uninterrupted views of the Zambezi River. The camp comprises four individual tents, each with their own spacious indoor lounge area, outdoor swimming pool and veranda with a private dining area. In addition, the two-bedroom Tembo Suite is perfect for families or two couples, with two private suites joined by a shared lounge, dining area and outdoor pool. Feel totally at ease as you unwind in the handmade bathtub or connect with nature in the outdoor shower. Each suite is also complete with professional-grade camera equipment and high-quality binoculars to capture remarkable wildlife encounters.
Currently the only Relais & Châteaux property in Zimbabwe, five-star cuisine and impeccable service are guaranteed. Conservation is also at the heart of everything they do here. Owners and National Geographic filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert have pioneered sustainable tourism throughout Africa for years, on a mission to protect this diverse continent’s last pockets of untouched wilderness. Tembo Plains Camp is no exception, set on the 128,000-hectare Sapi Reserve which was formerly a hunting area, established as a private reserve in 2016 by Great Plains Conservation to protect the incredible local ecozystem.
