We’d recommend starting or ending your Costa Rica travels with a day or two in San Jose. Packed with fascinating galleries, museums and restaurants, it’s a great place to take in the urban history and culture of the country. 

Intrepid travellers will love Costa Rica’s stunning Osa Peninsula and its huge rainforest. Said to be one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet, here you can get up close and personal with rare mammals such as tapirs, anteaters and ocelots, or go snorkelling in the Pacific Ocean, catching sight of colourful fish. Meanwhile, those that enjoy hiking should set their sights on Arenal volcano.

For something different, head inland to experience the narrow gorges and rolling hills of the Turrialba Valley, or try an exhilarating kayak down the rapids of the Pacuare river, catching your breath as you take in the beautiful surrounding landscapes and wildlife.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to just kick back and relax on glorious palm-lined beaches, the Caribbean coast is where you’ll want to be. And if all that relaxation gets a little much, you can always try surfing or diving in the Caribbean Sea.
