When the High Dam at Aswan was built during the 1960s and Lake Nasser was created, treasures from Ancient Egypt and Ancient Nubia had to be rescued from the rising waters. The Nubian Museum was built to house the smaller artefacts and has been built to evoke a Nubian village, surrounded by 43,000 square metres of landscaped gardens.
