The Ultimate Travelling Camp - Kohima Camp, Nagaland

The Ultimate Travelling Camp moves to the remote region of Nagaland in northeast India in late November/December for the colourful Hornbill Festival. The Kohima Camp offers a luxurious base from which to delve into this off-the-beaten track destination.

Nagaland, Calcutta and northeast India, India
  • Kohima Camp is only open during the Hornbill Festival which every year usually occurs at the end of November and beginning of December

  • First kind of truly nomadic luxury camps travelling India

  • Open during the tribal Hornbill Festival

  • Luxury in the wilderness - the tents are incredibly comfortable with hot showers and heaters

This breathtaking luxury concept was dreamt up by 'The Ultimate Travelling Camp', and we think it is really rather unique and absolutely spell-binding and showcases the destination through unique and exclusive experiences. Never has a luxury camp in India gone further off-the-beaten track to showcase the authentic hidden side to the country, pushing the boundaries of travel and taking guests to the more unexplored depths of rural India. Before the Ultimate Travelling Camp set up the Kohima Camp, there were only guesthouses on offer in the region, however now you can experience this amazing destination in all its authenticity by day, but retreat back to a superb luxury camp at night.

The camp focuses around the Hornbill Festival which showcases the best of Tribal cultural traditions from the Land of the Nagas, based in a small and stunning stretch of rugged mountain territory in an area where few tourists ever visit. The luscious emerald valleys and pastures with ribbons of turquoise streams meandering by serve as a backdrop as a hive of activity engulfs festival goers in a marvellous myriad of colours and tribal costumes. The ethos of these festivals are to bring the 16 different Nagaland tribes together in one frenzied and flamboyant event in December with the desire to share and promote cultural heritage. This encourages guests to delve deeper into the meaning of these cultures, immerse themselves in the folklore of the Phesama Village and take from it something very unique and personal.

When you are over-danced, you may bid your adieu and make your way back to Kohima Camp which will fulfil all your needs. The luxurious yet very secluded individual tents allow you to unwind and truly take in the beauty of the area. In the crisp linen beds you can put your feet up, while you are served by your own personal butler. To quench your thirst, enjoy a local rice beer and tickle your taste buds with the local delicacies on offer inspired by the recipes of the Naga tribes.

You can stay from two to four nights or more, and in addition to seeing the festival you can explore this relatively untouched corner of India where few tourists ever visit. One thing is for sure, you will be completely looked after as the mystic world of the Naga unravels around you. Lunch is provided in camp and if you want to do something other than the festival a visit to the local Kigwema village is worthwhile. These superlative tents are located in the foothills of the gigantic Japfu mountain where you can spend the evenings with a sundowner after a spectacular day in this unexplored haven.

Top tip:

With your private guide, make sure you go to the Hornbill Fesitval before it starts at 10am. I'd recommend going around 8:30 in the morning to watch the different tribes get ready for their performances. This is a fantastic way of learning about them and taking photos
