Take in the views over Casco Viejo and the wider city from the comfortable loungers by the rooftop pool.
With a history dating back to 1688, Hotel La Compañía wears its heritage with pride. Beautifully restored, the building has three wings which each reflect a period of its history - Spanish Colonial, French Colonial and American Beaux-Arts. Located within the UNESCO-listed Casco Viejo (also known as Casco Antiguo), it is perfectly placed to enjoy Panama’s most historic and vibrant cultural neighbourhood.
Brimming with luxe details and handsome grandeur, the restorers have weaved a romantic thread between the past and present at La Compañía. The hotel is a member of the Unbound Collection by Hyatt and spans a whole block with a stunning interior courtyard. What’s more, the beauty, history, art, and architecture on show make it feel like a living museum.
The main entrance is in the French Colonial wing and the inviting lobby features plush sofas, fresh flowers, and a contemporary vibe. Stone walls act as a stylish foil to clean white interiors and ceiling mouldings. The Spanish wing is the oldest part of the building and was originally built by the Jesuits as a convent. Historic heavy wooden beams and restored stone walls are on display, while the American Beaux-Arts wing has a vintage vibe combining a monochrome palette with pops of colour.
The 88 guestrooms, which include 12 suites, are split across each wing and reflect the architectural style of the period, while luxe amenities are universal and include climate control, Wi-Fi, HDTV, premium linens, Nespresso coffee maker, mini fridge, safety deposit box, complimentary minibar and ensuite bathroom with Molton Brown products, and hairdryer. Most rooms include a cosy living space and comfortable vintage furniture. Guests can choose from a choice of views that include the city or courtyard. We’d recommend a King Bed Courtyard View Room which includes a private balcony for enjoying the views.
There are four categories of suite. The largest is La Grande Francoise Suite which features a separate living room and dining area or book a Loft Suite in the American wing. On two floors, the suite includes a spacious top floor living area and considerable retro charm.
There are five onsite restaurants and two vibrant bars and the hotel is fast developing a reputation for world-class dining. Evoking the ambience of an old Spanish church, the stained glass, stone archways, and vaulted ceilings of El Santuario, are an excellent setting to enjoy Panamanian, Asian, Spanish, and Indian dishes. Or head to 1739, for fine wines from the extensive wine cellar served alongside French classics in the French Colonial wing. Guests can also enjoy a cocktail in the adjacent Exilio Bar. For those savouring old-school American favourites, head to the American Bazaar, while Italian fare is served up at Luigi’s.
For a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese fare, known as Nikkei cuisine, head to Hari’s, a fantastic blend of explosive colour and quirky design. We would recommend the fabulous rooftop bar, Capella for spectacular views and a convivial vibe, and there is also a bakery and coffee shop, serving delicious coffee from Finca Lérida.
The leisure facilities are excellent, with a rooftop pool area, fitness centre and spa. In the centre of Casco Viejo, Hotel La Compañía is around a 30-minute drive from Panama’s main international airport.
