Set in the shadow of the majestic Mount Meru, sometimes swathed in misty cloud, Legendary Lodge really does live up to its name.
At the end of a sweeping drive which carves its way through ramrod-straight rows of coffee bushes, each bush drooping with the weight of its red coffee beans, is this very special lodge. Perfectly manicured gardens with towering mature trees, brightly coloured flowers dotted about, and a myriad of birdlife surround the main house, decorated in colonial style and with a huge veranda on which delicious lunches are served.
The rooms are nestled in the gardens, comfortably apart from each other and each with its own veranda, some with views of the mountain and others with views of the garden. These rooms themselves are vast, each with a sitting area complete with open fire, and steps up to either twin or king size beds. At the back is the bathroom, with a delectable range of Africology toiletries, a rain shower and enormous bath, and double basins.
It’s a tranquil little bit of paradise, and perfect for a pre- or post-safari stopover, or indeed for a few nights’ relaxing break. Little touches can be found here and there – a vase of fresh roses in the room; a spiral bound notepad for guests to take with them; or a freshly stocked fruit bowl.
The lodge also has an extensive spa offering massages for the weary traveller, or manicures and pedicures. Overall the feeling is of very relaxed and understated luxury – but luxury all the same – and this makes Legendary Lodge one of our favourites in Arusha.
