Lesic Dimitri Palace
  • Hidden among the medieval walls of Korcula's Old Town, next door to the house of Marco Polo

  • Small boutique hotel with excellent personal service and attention to detail

  • Just a short walk from the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic

  • A collection of five self-contained residences with an excellent restaurant and spa

Of the many islands that dot the Dalmatian coastline, Korcula is certainly one of the most scenic, with crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, pine-clad hillsides and sun-bleached buildings steeped in history. According to legend, the island was founded by Trojan hero Antenor in the 12th century BC. Even today, the gentle pace of life and historic architecture feels like stepping back in time.

Lesic Dimitri Palace is a hidden gem set among the winding alleyways, terracotta-tiled houses and tiny churches of Korcula's Old Town, next door to Marco Polo's residence. Restored over five years from its original incarnation as the Bishop's Palace, the architects took inspiration from the great explorer's journeys along the Silk Road, which are reputed to have started in Korcula. Each of the five residences is themed by destination to reflect these travels: India, China, Venice, Ceylon and Arabia. They range from one to three bedrooms and each one has a fully fitted kitchen for self-catering or private dining by one of the hotel's excellent chefs.

The hotel's restaurant, LD Terrrace, is housed in the oldest part of the hotel and celebrates the local dishes of the region. There is also a beautifully equipped spa, with treatments influenced by the Silk Road, Thailand and the Mediterranean and products featuring herbs and flowers organically grown in Dalmatia.

Although Lesic Dimitri is more of a collection of boutique residences than a hotel there is a full concierge service available. Highly recommended, is a tour of the Old Town with the hotel's owner, Toni, who is a wealth of information on the island's history. A visit to one of the local vineyards to sample the produce of the region is also a wonderful way to while away an afternoon.
