Kyoto Family Adventure
This tour is perfect for families, as kids will enjoy spotting the holy fox statues, learning about Shinto fortune telling, and leaving their wishes on a traditional wooden prayer board in a creative manner.
Begin the morning with a visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of the most sought after sightseeing experiences in the city. Tens of thousands of vermillion tori gates are arranged in tunnels that snake up the mountain, and countless small shrines dot the hillsides. At the base of the mountain, there are ample opportunities to sample street food and pick up a sweet snack.
Moving up into the city by rail, visit the quiet Buddhist temple of Shoren-in. Adults will marvel at the fantastic pond garden and the elegant architecture of the former imperial residence here while kids are sure to appreciate ringing the massive temple bell. This is one of the very few temples in Kyoto where this activity is possible!
Continuing on, visit a selection of sites in eastern Kyoto before arriving at Teramachi Shopping Street. Hundreds of shops line this bustling market district, providing a great opportunity for browsing and souvenir shopping. Enjoy lunch here before moving on to the west side of the city.
Arrive in Arashiyama, the charming mountainside district beloved by visitors for centuries. Explore the famous bamboo forest, surely a memorable spot for children and a perfect location for some family photos. Enter the magnificent Tenryuji Zen Temple, known for its 14th century garden that revolutionized the way landscapes were designed.
The grand finale for the day is a short hike to the lively Arashiyama Monkey Park. This is sure to be the highlight of the day for kids – and parents – who love animals. Watch the wild monkeys scamper about the hilltop while taking in a gorgeous view of Kyoto city.
Return to the city with the guide, or part ways in Arashiyama to continue exploring the area.
