Stellenbosch, South Africa

Situated in the Western Cape, about 30 miles from Cape Town, Stellenbosch is a beautiful location that’s home to spectacular wine, food, art, and culture.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s second-oldest town and a must-visit spot if you’re in the area. Renowned for its spectacular wine, gastronomy scene, and wealth of galleries and museums, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The destination itself is also spectacular, surrounded by mountain ranges, grassy nature reserves, and plentiful vineyards - and it’s only a 45-minute drive from Cape Town to Stellenbosch.

The town is characterized by streets lined with Georgian mansions, quirky independent shops, and intriguing historical sights, but it’s Stellenbosch’s world-class wineries that really draw in the crowds…

Things to do in Stellenbosch

Top of your list of things to do in Stellenbosch, South Africa, should of course be sampling some local wines - Stellenbosch wine is an unmissable delicacy! Thanks to the area’s favorable climate, Stellenbosch is a world-renowned wine region, with its hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters providing the perfect conditions for truly great wines.

The best way to get a flavor for this famed Winelands location is with expert-led tastings and tours amid grand mountain vistas and endless rows of perfect vines. It’s worth noting that many of the estates are family-friendly too, ideal if you’re traveling with the kids.

If you’re not just here for the wine, however, other things to do include:

  • Gallery hopping - if you’re a fan of the arts, you’ll be spoiled for choice with Stellenbosch’s many museums and galleries. Popular spots include the Dylan Lewis sculpture garden, MOK gallery, and Rupert Museum.
  • Eating & drinking - aside from Stellenbosch’s famous wineries, there are plenty of excellent restaurants and cafes around town to enjoy. Highlights include The Wine Glass, Helena’s Restaurant, and Rust en Vrede. We also recommend the historic Root44 food market for all manner of tasty, fresh treats.
  • Hiking and outdoor activities - hike the nearby mountains, wander the glorious nature reserves, or rent a bike or scooter to explore this stunning region - the choice is yours.
  • Shopping - need some retail therapy? Stellenbosch is also home to plenty of charming local shops and independent markets, with handmade homeware, art, and gifts a favorite here.
