Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in the south-west of Uganda, is home to a huge variety of wildlife and endangered species, the most famous of which is the mountain gorilla. As Bwindi Forest contains half of the world’s mountain gorilla population it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in order to protect and preserve the area and its flora and fauna.
Part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area which spans Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park sits in the western part of the Great Rift Valley. The mountainous area, which reaches heights of up to 2,600 meters, contains a hugely diverse wildlife population within its many ridges and valleys. The endangered mountain gorillas are the main attraction here, but lucky visitors will also have the chance to spot chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s monkey, and some of the 346 species of bird, to name but a few.
